Escambia County Fire Rescue Station 19 (Perdido Key) was established on September 13, 2004 to provide 24 hour fire protection to the residents of Perdido Key and the surrounding areas. Prior to this date, fire protection for the area was provided by both a volunteer sub-station on the Key, and a combination station on the mainland staffed from Monday through Friday, 7am-4pm with career firefighters, and volunteer protection during all other hours.
After several high-value property losses in the mid-1980's, several task forces were conducted. The results of all these studies were the same: Perdido Key needed full-time paid fire protection to provide adequate coverage. This is due to the large life-hazard associated with the mid and high-rise construction and the necessity of highly-trained personnel to mitigate incidents involving these structures.
Station 19 protects a 7 square mile area consisting of single family residences, light commercial structures, and numerous highrise condominimums ranging up to 23 stories in height. Perdido Key is a primarily resort area. We have one national seashore and two state parks in our response area, as well as a total of approximately 9 miles of shoreline on the Gulf of Mexico and 11 miles of protected shoreline we provide water rescue capabilites for.
In addition to the fire protection issues, the career crews at Station 19 also provide Advanced Life Support care. The apparatus at Station 19 is manned by at least one paramedic and 2-3 EMTs on each shift, with a full complement of ALS equipment. In addition, due to the distances required for transport of patients to the nearest medical facilities, Station 19 crews work very closely with the crews from Lifeflight 1 based at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, and Lifeflight 2 based at USA Medical Center in Mobile, AL.
